    Hard Drive puked.....

Been off for a few weeks but busy on the Smithin' bench. I think most on here
have experienced the infamous "fatal error". I have seen at least a half dozen
drive failures, or the blue screen death of Ram.....I was in the middle of a
forum explore when everything shut down. Did the normal cold boot, and "NADA"
Back up drive was able to kick in but only in safe ( slow ) mode. So it begins
again !! Got the old guy runnin' on the back up just enough to check mail and
forum text with an old FireFox browser. In the mean time, a PC shop here in Erie
I know very well, is building me a custom 10 machine, and getting set up with a
T-Mobile 5G gateway router.....We'll just call this my next wild cat.....LOL

My boy mentioned something about that also. I'll get with the guy's
doing the work, and see about any other irritants need gone. So far
there has been problems with loading legacy engineering software
that runs good in Win 7 that was carried over from XP. May forego
    10 and just use 7.

When my 7 machine goes, I will be going to a version of UBUNTU.

Create an image of your Win7 installs, or get the image from MS Windows and run a virtual machine instance of it on a newer/faster computer. That way you can continue using the legacy programs indefinitely.

Better yet, make an disc image of the running system. I use https://www.easeus.com/ but there are other freebies out there. I store the images (I have three boxes) on an external one TB HD drive. If one of the drives crash and burn 15-20 minutes later with a spare HD I'm up and running. The most I'll loose is when I made the image(s) which at the most is a month's worth.
