The magazines are built to house the caliber/cartridge. If they used s full length magazine then the rounds could shift forward under recoil leading to feeding problems.
I found a long action .243 today with the short Mag box on board. Are these very common? The place also has a 110 in 7.82 Patriot I guess they got as part of an estate (I think I'll have this at my house tomorrow, cause it's neat)
