Sanity Check needed on an Old 99.

Hello. It has been a while. So long that I had to start a new account. Anyways I picked up a new one back in November and initially I thought it was a 1899A or possibly a transition era gun. It was drilled and tapped and a base was covering the front receiver ring but last night I took the bases off and "Savage Model 99" on the front ring. 26" Barrel - straight butt stock. (No Perch belly) - ramp front sight (that should have been my first clue) - chamber indicater stud - jeweled bolt - 99 lever safety - rifle Cresent butt plate - solid frame, not take down - .300Savage.
I'm thinking it is a 99B now. Can anyone concur?

99B was take down only. According to the ser# yours was made in 1926. Can't find anything else with a 26" barrel.

I thought the 99B solid frame had a 26" Barrel and the Take Down version had a 24" Barrel?

Ok I guess the best i can come up with is 99A from 1926 with a 26" barrel. The front sight has obviously been changed at some point, probably when the Williams peep was added. I'm not sure as to when Savage began with jeweled bolts. Was that an option in earlier years?

None of my Savages have jeweled bolts and they date from between 1908-1930. I'm guessing when the rear sight was added the action had to be disassembled, and it was jeweled at that time.
The 99A came out in 1926, but is only listed with a 24" barrel, but barrel length was an option on earlier models for $1 for each inch up to 30". If only these old rifle could talk, that would answer a lot of questions!! :)

you can jewel the bolt with a pencil eraser, never done it, but it has been done. looks like it could be done with the bolt in place

Okay...

1899A - 26" round barrel made from 1899 to 1921, available with takedown from 1906 onwards.
1899B - 26" octagon barrel made from 1899 to 1917.
99A - 26" round barrel made from 1921 to 1927, solid frame. 24" barrel from 1927 to 1940.
99B - 26" round barrel made from 1921 to 1927, takedown. 24" barrel from 1927 to 1934.

The 1899A morphed into the 99A and 99B in 1921 when Savage assigned serial numbers. No physical changes were made to the guns. All Savage 99's had "SAVAGE 1899 MODEL" stamped on the receiver ring until 1926, when Savage finally got around to changing the stamp to "SAVAGE MODEL 99". The receiver stamp has nothing to do with the catalogued model.

My 1928 K in 300 has a jeweled bolt.

Damascening the bolt AND lever was a catalogued option up into the 30's, but it's rarely seen as it was quite expensive. Both the bolt and portion of the lever that extends into the rifle would be jeweled. The Savage 99K came with lots of features, but did not come standard with jeweled bolt.
