    Extractor size

Getting ready to swap a 308 bolt head to a 223 bolt I have.
Looking at them both the 223 has a longer extractor than the 308 bolt I already have for another rifle. Searching for extractors seems like no one differentiates between the two. Can this longer extractor be used on the 308 bolt head swap or do I need a different piece? I searched and searched but seems like everyone just offers an extractor with no distinction on length or bolt head size. Thanks. Click image for larger version.

    The correct ones are different.

You do know you have been scorching your 223 bolt face.

The longer .223 extractor will not work in the .308 boltface. The short extractors will work in any boltface.

Is that a bolt face or a tig torch?

Lol man I was wondering if someone would point that out. I Picked up a brand new unfired 12fv in 223. Decided to see what it did accuracy wise before I pulled the barrel off. Third round of hornady factory 223 75 hpbt exploded and sprayed my eye with grit and gas, knocked the extractor back enough to leave it set back over the detent ball. Had to click the extractor back in place, reinsert bolt, wiggle the primer piece and close the bolt to get the case back out. None of my handloads had an issue.

I fired my handloads first, no issue. Only thing i noticed was that some cases had resistance on closing, i figured headspace was rather tight from the factory. Did the same on the factory hornady Mmo as well

And thank you for clearing up the extractor size question. I guess now for curiosity's sake open the discussion as to why that hornady round blew the primer out on me. First time in many many thousands of rounds I have had a primer blow. My hand loads were about 75% book charge and no issues on them. I did not pull the chrono out that day due to rain, really wish I did after that happened. I packed up went home and immediately removed the barrel and got a 308 on the way

Hello. How many sizes of extractors does Savage have for the 10/110 series of bolt rifle? I have a 10FP in 308 and a 116 in 300 RUM. My plan is to switch to aftermarket barrels.

At least 2 and I was under the impression the rum was shorter still but honestly, I do not know. James, Fred or somebody else will need to chime in. Im not sure how aftermarket barrels will impact the extractor...unless you are changing cartridges.
