    savage handgun build questions

I have seen many pictures of savage build handguns. However, I live in Illinois and must meet the following requirements for a legal handgun for deer hunting:
The only legal ammunition for a centerfire handgun is (1) a bottleneck
centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding
1.4 inches, or (2) a straightwalled centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber
or larger, with no minimum case length; both of which must be available
with the published ballistic tables of the manufacturer showing a capability
of at least 500 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle.

    1. Can I build a 454 Casull or 460 SW mag since they are rimmed? Feeding out of a magazine is not a concern. A single shot would be fine.
    2. I have a H and R 20 Ga now but I want something more accurate and cheaper to just shoot and a better trigger. I am tired of the expensive slugs. And the handgun builds look cool. I know I could get a TC contender but everyone has one of those.
    Thanks

    Re: savage handgun build questions

If I can build one what type of bolt face will work with the 460 or 454?

And cheap would just be being able to load my own ammo.

Sounds like you are an Indiana hunter, the 358 IDC would work also.

    Re: savage handgun build questions

sinman just did some checking and the 358 IDC does not fit this catagory1) a bottleneck
centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding
    1.4 inches,
I live in Illinois. Very anti gun and no rifle hunting at all for deer.

    Re: savage handgun build questions

I see the 460 SW mag has a rim diameter of .520, the 480 ruger .542, and 500 sw .560. Could any of these work with a 300 wsm mag bolt face which is .535????????

Also, I was not looking at a striker build but using an existing rifle action. I have the 300 wsm now and a couple of small shank actions.

the savage is not rimmed case friendly. a rimmed case is not intended to stick out of a barrel and there is not as much material in the web. there meant to be pushed up tight with nothing more then an extractor grove opening. 50 Bauwolf meets your requirements, but is not cheap. , 400 whelen should work also. you would be working with cheap .30-06 cases

Snowgetter1 I know it is not a Savage, but my son bought a 450 Marlin barrel for his Encore for this purpose . It is 15 inch with a muzzle brake and he is shooting a 300 grain Sierra and RL-7 powder. It is something too hold on to but it shoots great.

An easy one to build on a savage would be a 300 whisper or 300/221 fireball. The 358 is 1/4" to long, nut you could get a short 358 IDC by just not running the reamer the last 1/4"

    Re: savage handgun build questions

Just a quick note on building a pistol. MAKE sure you build it from a pistol action that was sold as a pistol action. I say this because if you fit as barrel less than 16 inches to a rifle action you have just made a short barreled rifle known as a SBR by the ATF. This requires a $200.00 tax stamp to the ATF, forms, and a waiting period. Additionally, if the overall length is less than 20inches (I think its 20 inches...but check), then it is a SBR. This is no different than putting a stock on a pistol, the pistol is now a SBR. I am not saying it can not be done, but do it legal, and pay the ATF.

In short....build a pistol from a pistol and do not put a stock on the pistol and you'll be fine.

    Re: savage handgun build questions

I knew I could find an answer on here. Great idea sinman. Ballistics look really good on the 300 whisper and it seems it would be managable in a handgun platform. One of your muzzle brakes would probally go on just for insurance. Awesome idea and it meets the law requirements. I guess this would feed from a magazine also since i see it is used in ARs.

Now I maybe looking for a left handed action though. I think the left bolt left load would be better on a handgun for hunting. Any input anyone?

I see after reading Handloaders post I need to do some checking on laws. Hopefully this doesn't derail the good idea I had floating through my head all night.

    On the large cailber side....

You could build a 450 bushmaster. That is probably the one I would build
mostly because its a factory shell you can actually find.

    50 beowulf
    50 AE
    45 winmag pistol cartridge
    Probably 10mm auto too.

Also 450 marlin or a 458 winmag if you want more recoil.

I think a 30 carbine would also fit the criteria but its weak.

    Re: savage handgun build questions

Illinois law states it is illegal to have: "any rifle having one or more barrels less than 16 inches in length or a shotgun having one or more
barrels less than 18 inches in length or any weapon made from a rifle or shotgun, whether by
alteration, modification, or otherwise, if such a weapon as modified has an overall length of less
    than 26 inches"

measuring my short action stevens it appears I would have to have a 18" barrel length to get the 26 total legal inches. Or find a striker.

18-19" barrel is a perfect bolt action length IMO.

    Very handy.

17" on a rifle keeps you over 20" min. Choate stocks cut down easy.

    Re: savage handgun build questions

BUT THIS IS NOT A HANDGUN, IT IS A PISTOL GRIPED RIFLE! If the action came from a rifle to start with You would be in violation of the law using it for a hand gun hunt.
If you need a hand gun, it is not the way to go.You need to start with a clean brand new non-designated action or a Savage striker / Rem xp platforme.

love the pics. After seeing the stock work I think I too can build a pistol grip rifle.

Sorry. I was thinking of a build someone did with .45 ACP and mistakenly remembered it as .45 LC.
