model 99 returned after 47 years

This gun was stolen from my parents house 47 years ago and miraculously made its way home in November. Any help with decoding its manufacturing date or specific model number would be greatly appreciated. I think my Grandpa bought it brand new. My father passed in 1997 but hopefully he is smiling knowing it finally made it back home. Here is a link for the pics.

Nice looking rifle. To get that back after 47 years is remarkable. Thank you for sharing the story and pictures.

It appears to me it was made in 1953 if I am reading the serial number right.

    Looks great!
I’m sure it passed thru many hands in the last 47 years, so even more remarkable it has so few dings and scratches!
Also noticed it has no sling swivels . . . .and I hope you refrain from installing same.
When hunting with my “swiveless” Winchester M92, I installed a strip of leather under the buttplate (captured with the lower buttplate screw) on one end, and wrapped a piece of rawhide around the barrel in front of the forend, then riveted the other end of the strip to the rawhide loop, to sling the rifle while carrying thru the woods.
Worked out just fine, . . . .kept hands free to push twigs, brush, etc., aside . . .and kept the rifle ORIGINAL!

Nice one. I inherited my grandpas model 99 308. It took some smoke damage from a fire and he hired some savage Gun Jones to clean it up. Reblued and refinished. Travesty! I gave it to my son. Smooth and an excellent shooter.
