First post, thanks for having me. Dad picked up a savage in 22 high power. It's a takedown model with the 20" barrel. The receiver is stamped 899 model on top of the receiver ring. Maybe a light stamp as the L in the word model is deep and gets shallower towards the beginning. My delimma is that savage list this as a 1923 model. Serial number 2504xx. Shouldn't it be a 99? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Sounds like a 99E light weight, made from 1922-1934. Probably miss marked. As far as I can tell the 1899 do not have the model marking on the receiver ring.
The 1899H was the feather weight in .22hp was only made from 1912-1919 and only in a take down.
Thanks for the reply. That's what is confusing. The serial number says one thing and the model number another. It definitely has an 899. I found a reference to another on the net but no replies. Could the receiver be made before 1920 but assembled after? Am I correct about the 1899 ending in 1920?Originally Posted by Big Al1

1899 was never stamped on the receiver ring, it was always on the barrel.
"Made before/assembled after" would/could be a real possibility. Having read alot on Savages production practices of not wasting, possibly back when they were stamping them 1899 the receiver ring was rejected due to the improper stamping, few years down the road some dollar watchin supervisor found it and said "Assemble it". Read on another forum sometime back of similar incidents. Not just with Savage either, but by other manufacturers . Nothing wrong with saving a dime, adds mystery to some firearms years later. Colt back in the percussion/switch to cartridge's was big time on using old parts laying around. You've probably heard this before "Never say never with Savage"!
Again, thanks for all the insight. Dad's planning on keeping this one. I have dibs if he changes his mind. I have two others, both in 300 savage. I managed to get him one box of cartridges yesterday on gunbroker. The gun came with two boxes.
Just located a Savage made in 1922 stamped 1899 on the receiver ring. It's on gunbroker now and they had some good pictures. Looks like Savage was using up those odd parts just like some have stated. Thanks everyone for your insight.
Probably that's the case!! All three of my 1899's, pre WWI, are marked on the barrel, my 99 dated from 1930, is marked on the top of the ring! If they could only talk!
