    Strange Smell

I'm a relatively new long-gun shooter. I have handled pistols for years.

    I recently purchased a Savage Recon - its a beautiful AR15....

I brought it home, cleaned and lubed it, and took it to the range for break in today.
The rifle handled flawlessly! NICE work Savage.

    But, here's my question:
There was a very strong ammonia smell when shooting.
I'm used to the various smells from my pistols, but this was strong and distinctive.
....was using Sellier/Belloit 556, FMJ. I didn't have anything else to see if it was the ammo.

Is there something in the ammo (normal NATO 556 from S&B) that would have that smell?
Or is there something on the gun that will "wear-in" and be less strong?

It doesn't effect the Pew-Pew downrange, but is a little pew-pew on the nose....

    THoughts?

    WEC

It's the powder. Changing ammo will change what you're smelling.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.
