New to site with savage 99 question

Avid shooter and under funded collector. New to site but have had this Savage 99 for some time now and would like to know more about it.
.308 with brass counter and fancy fore end. 22"BBL #9048** Almost as accurate as my Remington LTR. Both shoot far better than I can.

Welcome to the forums. I can't shed much light on your 99 other than it is an older one with the cartridge counter. Post your question in the Vintage Rifle section, someone there should be able to help you date the rifle.

    Hello from another 99 lover!

From what I've learned about my old Savage 99F is that that while the serial number can provide some indication of age, there is a little (and often lightly stamped) code just above where the lever is hinged.(Lever boss code I believe it's called). There will be a number or two followed by a letter. That letter gives an accurate representation of age. So starting at "A" which if memory serves is 1949 and so on. So mine is an "L" which dates the rifle to 1960. I hope that helps!
