Savage 12 FV Finish

What kind of finish is on the Cabalas 12FV? It’s not blued, I don’t think it’s a form of Parkerize? It almost looks like paint. Can it take heat?

From what I can tell, the finish on my two 12 FVs is no different than the finish on my 10 FCP-K, my 10 FP, and my 12 LRP.

It lasts.

My 10 FP is a 2008 vintage and the original barrel had 6500 rounds through it before I had it replaced with another Savage barrel that now has 3800 rounds through the new one. Both were finished the same but i had the new barrel fluted and threaded. The 10 FCP-K is 2012 vintage with 4400 rounds through it.
The finish on them is as good as it was when I got them.

My 12 LRP has 4000 rounds down the barrel and the two 12 FVs are approaching that number pretty quickly.

As far as I am concerned, the finish is very effective and I would buy another 12 FV tomorrow if they ever become available again.

I believe it's blued. However, the metal isn't finished as smoothly as older model rifles.

Whatever it is, CLR will eat it like candy... It takes the heat a barrel can generate, what are you wanting to do with it?

It is blued, but the metal has been bead blasted so the finish in Matte instead of a Polished finish like rifles that the metal has been polished before the bluing process.

One reason I asked, I like to apply the minimum amount of heat needed to easily remove the nut and barrel, usually a heat gun is adequate. It never hurt bluing. I have used CLR to remove carbon, and it is awesome. But Bore Tec carbon remover does everything I need, so I go with it. Thanks Guys

I have pulled the barrels off 6 new 12FVs and never used any heat to remove the nuts.

Yeah, I have taken 3 12FV barrels off, one with a round nut, and they all came off quite easily.

I have soaked the finish with oil on my 12FVs and later wipe down with a white cloth. I get a brown color on the cloth and it diminishes every time I do that.

Blued gun gets a bit of rust. If you put it in boiling water will it turn blue, a la the true rust blue?

Only if you ad bluing salts to the water.

I always rust blued by dipping in the salt tank, get a good layer of rust, card off and boil in distilled water.
