savage 10 BA stealth Barrel shank size

Can someone please tell what barrel shank size the 10 BA stealth has Thanks. Looking at a 6.5 creedmore and i already have a 308 small shank barrel hoping to do a barrel swap. We have been looking for a reasonably priced 308 and found a smoking deal on a 6.5 . Thanks

Take a set of calipers, measure what you know is the small shank or just the other, you can easily find the diameters with a Google search.

Also... you can just look at the barrel nut. Large shank nuts are quite a bit shorter than the small shank ones.

It looks like the one I’m looking at is a small shank. It is tan and black. My question is did they make both or did someone put a 10 in the chassis?

I have never seen a Savage 1.005 thread.

That's why all my posts have been edited. I have so many typos.

I don't *think* so, but sometimes some weird stuff makes it out the door. Maybe they were using up old parts inventory, maybe someone did a special order... .

or did someone put a 10 in the chassis?
...or someone just dropped an earlier model in an MDT chassis. I put a 10 PC-SR in an LSS-XL, with a skeleton buttstock - pretty slick setup. One gun I truly regret selling.

The good news is that there are way more aftermarket options for good quality small shank barrels than there are for large shank.

The ones with a large shank were Target action repeaters. They had the shrouded bolt. The small shank versions had the standard 10 action with an un-shrouded bolt.

    EDIT: Read memilanuk's post below.

Mmmm... I have a 10 BA Stealth sitting in the safe that is a large shank, but not a Target Action. Not sure what you mean by "shrouded bolt"? Small ejection port, maybe?

I think at some point Savage decided to start moving more models over to the large shank and/or larger scope base screws (8-32)... right about the time more manufacturers started using Savage small shank threads so people could use pre-fit barrels easier.

I was not aware of that. All I ever saw was WSM's in the large shank standard action. I also learned about the larger screws in a non magnum, Thanks.
And yes, Shrouded bolt is the small ejection port.
