    sanitizing rifles

at our Boy Scout summer camp rifle range, we are being told we need to sanitize the rifles-any ideas/suggestions on what to use- a mild bleach solution, alcohol-
wipes or spray or a commercial sanitizer ? We have the Savage Mark I's.

I know there is a growing concern about all the Covid crisis going on and the mass hysteria of being safe rather than sorry, but most of the propaganda comes from paranoid parents who have been conditioned by the media to think that everything is a carrier of disease. Instead of getting into the politics and the spread of misinformation ( that would be a long rant), I'll get to the point.
Alcohol based sanitizers are for skin, bleach sanitizers are for surfaces. Bleach sanitizers are not for metal surfaces, as it will dry out the pores and leaves it susceptible to rust.
There have been ridiculous measures taken to "quarantine" mail and packages through the postal system for up to 2 weeks to make sure that things are "safe" to ship. This is nothing more than ignorance and political policy, and does nothing more than hold up the whole system.
Personally, I would spray the rifles down with WD-40, wipe them down good and let them set in the sun for a hour.

    What he said above.

Covid-19 does not like full sun....2 minutes will do it.

Covid-19 has a shell that 70-90% Isopropyl alcohol dissolves and kills. Good luck finding any!...so if you used an alcohol spray i guess you could follow it up with WD-40 or equivalent.
1/3 Cup of Clorox to 1 gallon of water is good for surfaces.

Yeah. That sounds ridiculous. I'd think a simple cleaning and wipe down would suffice.

Alcohol as I understand it is the best on surfaces. Finding it is
easy. It's said you should have about 70% purity. Isopropyl can
be found as a gasoline additive for cold weather, although a
typical rip off since most our gasoline's are 10% ethanol. And
speaking of ethanol, yes it's just as good. Can be found at any
liquor store. Good o'l Moonshine !! And then there's methanol.
    Most race shops carry it.

I would stay away from bleach if you can. Bleach and metal don't always get along. Isopropyl alcohol above 70% would be optimal, as you could use it in a spray bottle and any that you can't get wiped off will evaporate. Be cautious since it is a flammable liquid. Follow up with a light oil wipe down of metal surfaces.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!
