    Savage 1899 question

I recently purchased an 1899 take down in .250-3000. The barrel tenon screw has seen better days and I finally managed to get it out with no damage. However, the very end of the screw threads are misshapen so I cannot check thread pitch on the thread checker I have. Anyone know what size and thread pitch the screw is?

If you mean the escutsion for the forearm release button, I removed one from mine and as close as I can tell it's an 6x40. I measured the threads with a thread pitch gauge, a 6x48 did not work! Screw measured .128"

Thank you. I believe you are very close as this screw measures .131. This screw is for the tenon fitted to the dovetail in the barrel which the forend latches onto. I think it was a half dog screw but sometime in the last 100 plus years the nub has worn away and the screw was damaged by being tightened against the barrel dovetail proper instead of the mortice in said dovetail. I appreciate your response.

OK now I know what you mean! It's like a long plug screw. I took one out and it appears to be 40 TPI.
