Should I buy a 110 Hunter. 11 trophy Hunter or 10 trophy Hunter.......

    Gentleman, I need advice,
I'm looking to get one of these Rifles but unable to make a decision,as a savage owners and experience with one these rifles
maybe few of you can help. I don't hunt , I bench shoot , at my club we only have 200 yds. to shoot at paper targets.
I reload my own ammo, and dies I have are 223 Rem and 7.62x39. So I'll be looking for 223 caliper. So what do you say.
Thank you for responding to my request.

While you're at it, take a look at the 110 Varmint in 223. If you are strictly a bench shooter, you would benefit from the heavier barrel.

If you don't need the features and added cost of the Accufit system on the Varmint model, many members of this site will enthusiastically recommend the 12 FV from Cabelas.

If your budget is more generous, you don't plan any modifications, and you plan to own it for a while, the 12BVSS and the 12VLP models are good looking and accurate rifles.

12FV or a hog hunter would be the cheapest choice.
I also agree that the BVSS or VLP are great rifles.

    I have a 12 FV .223 (made by Savage for Cabela's) with a 26-inch barrel and a hidden magazine.
It is a great rifle and shot great right out of the box.
I have almost 3,100 rounds down the tube and it is shooting better than ever.
The 12 FV is regularly on sale (mine was $319.99 but several buddies got their rifles on sale with a rebate and paid $269.99).
But even at list price it is a good buy if you are anxious to get one and don't want to wait.
All of the 12 FVs that I have seen shoot are very accurate and, from the comments on this forum, many have had the same opinion.
They are perfect for bench shooting off a solid front rest and rear bag.

It is a 1:9 twist but I shoot 77 grain Sierra SMKs and TMKs with it and it shoots them as good as any of the bullets that are supposed to stabillize in a 1:9 twist. The 77s are supposed to be marginally stable but you couldn't prove it by my results.

    Ruger 10/22
Space it out. Go down the worm hole.
A centerfire can get boring and expensive to me at 100-200yds
    Just my opinion.

The old 10s with heavy barrels will grant you sub moa groups with a few little mods to the stock and trigger.
IMO no need for removable mags and monster bolt handles.
I have a AR platform for that noise.

    Cheers mate

I have a .223 single shot (not a Savage) and also a M11 that started in a Trophy Hunter XP box. The .223 Rem is a nice caliber for paper punching. If I was going for bench in .223 I'd look for a heavier barrel than the Trophy Hunter series. They are GREAT for deer hunting (I use a .260 Rem and love it) but for tweaking out the most from a bench a heavier barrel, like the Varmint series, will be favored for much shooting. I spend much more time letting my light sporter weight M11 cool after two or three shots than is convenient for bench work. Not a concern in the woods.

Used rifles are sometimes a good deal. What is your budget?

Yes for your list from the first post IF you get a magazine like the 10-round Snyder that uses the Axis style "plastic" flap catch. It is not an AICS style. He sleeves and welds a G3 magazine inside an Axis style Savage magazine and uses a much beefier push-button catch.

    https://www.snydermags.com/

    From his website:

We build magazines for these Savage short-action rifles:

    • Savage Edge
    • Savage Axis
    • Savage Axis II
    • Model 10
    • Model 11
    • Model 12
    • Model 14
    • Model 16
    • Model 110 (short-action only)
    • Model 111 (short-action only)

Why do you need a magazine for bench shooting?

Is a Savage model 110 a short action or long action? Can I get 110 in 223 caliper? Some people are telling me to get a long action, that I would be better off with.
    WHAT SAY YOU?

Gentlemen, I decided to get a model 11. as for now ( 4/1/20) replace the stock and scope, plus rings,in 223 Caliper. maybe a Choate stock or a Boyd.
Thank you all for your help and feed-back.

marine one, I too have the Trophy Hunter XP, in 22-250. I bought it for a lightweight "truck" gun that didn't break the bank. I'd recommend trying it out as is before changing too much. I found the Nikon scope to be very decent but swapped out the cheap rings for a DNZ one piece mount. Also swapped in a metal trigger guard from Gunshack and found a sweet spot for action screw torque. I use bags from the bench versus a bipod and have no noticeable issue with stock flex. I will say that, while my groups stay pretty consistent, POI changes with barrel temperature, something hard to avoid with a sporter barrel. Good luck with your 11.

The nicest feature for bench shooting is accuracy.
And for that a heavier barrel is a plus, but a magazine isnt.

Said above, but I'll repeat it.
You don't want a sporter-weight barrel for a target rifle, any more than one would want a ten pound bull barrel on a hunting rifle that's going to be toted on your back into the mountains.
There's a reason heavier contour barrels are used for target shooting. It's not that they're any more accurate, per se, than heavier contour barrels.
It's that heavier contour barrels allow you to send significantly more rounds downrange when the line is hot without sacrificing accuracy.

With a lightweight barrel, you will need to wait much longer between shots so as not to overheat your barrel- meaning less rounds downrange. The antithesis to the whole idea of "practice".

Continuing to shoot a barrel that's become too hot will not only result in inaccuracy/shot stringing, but do permanent damage in the form of premature throat erosion.

Get a rifle that's commensurate with the intended use and you'll be much happier...

I do use the factory plastic stock as it's a walkin around beater for me.

I still think ( my preference ) a magazine would add an extra feature to rifle, I don't have to use it, but it's there.

Hi tobnpr, For now I must use the sporter barrel until I can get a heavier barrel, the model 11 comes with a light barrel.
    Thanks for your feed-back.

This is within your budget, and a much better choice for dedicated target shooting:
