Post Newcomer to the long game

Hello to all hailing from Pennsylvania wishing to get into the long game. Been around firearms and cars for about 30 years. Finally took the coarse for Gunsmith few years back to get the cert and past I guess being around Firearms for 30 years helped with the knowledge base. With that said looking into the long game work my way up to the 1100 meter line. Still researching caliber that can do it and not break the bank. I am currently looking at the model 12 LRP 243 or 260 was entertaining the 308 also I will be getting into reloading once the choice is made. My one small caveat is I am not looking to the Creedmoor or Magnums to get the job done out to that distance and still hit steel with authority. Looking to learn as much as i can in all the aspects.
    Thank again

I built a .260 a few years back and have no complaints for shooting to 1000 yards. The "hitting with authority" part though, not so much. the 143 ELD-X @ 2765 FPS at the muzzle is only carrying 1460 FPS & 683 ft/lbs energy @ 1000 yards. It does ring steel though.

Maybe take a look at the 6.5 PRC... It's not a Creed nor is it a Magnum... It does require a magnum bolt face however.

I know you said .243 or .260 caliber options, but I will also through in .280 or .280AI as another option to the 6.5 PRC that was mentioned previously. It supposedly will spit the .284 (7mm) 160 grain bullets between 2850-2900 FPS @ the muzzle from a 24" barrel. At 1000 yards it will still be carrying 800+ Ft/lbs of energy and still cruising @ 1500+ FPS. Works on a standard LA, standard bolt face, and still NOT a Magnum. I've been looking at this option myself, as a replacement for my Elk rifle (30-06). I want to have something that will carry 1500 Ft/lbs energy @ 500-600 yards.

You didnt mention what part of PA your from, but it might be beneficial for you to pay a visit to the Ridgeway Rifle Club near the town of Ridgeway in the n/c part of the state.
They hold benchrest steel silouette matches there at targets up to 1000 yds.
I believe you will find the most popular guns used are those having 308 size cases in 6.5 and 7mm bore sizes.
Also as you may know, PA has a large population of hunters who hunt specifically long range.
There you wont be finding any similarities in preferred cartridges to the target shooters.
