243 and 257 roberts

So I am scratching my head.

Will a 243 (short action) rebarreled to 257 bob have enough room for a full length cartridge?

From what I have read it will work...

Let me know what you think, thanks nate

Nate, What type action do you have? (mfg. & Model)

It will "work" but won't work well with 120 grain or VLD type bullets (you will have to stuff them pretty far back in the case if you want to load from the mag).

A 250 savage AI would be a better choice on a short action (or just go to the long action for your Roberts).

It will work perfectly. I've done it. I have one in my safe right now. It's my daughter's lefty 16 with the drop plate magazine. It came with the factory 243 bbl on it. It now wears a Sin Arms 257 Roberts barrel. I had to do nothing else at all, other than just screw the barrel in and headspace it. I did not have to modify the magazine in any way. There is PLENTY of room in the factory magazine for Federal Premium 120 gr Nosler partition ammo. I ran the test with that factory ammo, as well as Hornady light magnum 117 gr factory ammo.

I can seat my handloads out to longer than the "max" over all length listed in a couple of loading manuals, and it will feed through the magazine fine. The throat in my bbl isn't cut long or anything, I was just dinking around and testing seating depths and feeding. With bullets seated to just jump to the rifling, I'm just a touch under max oal with my loads in my bbl.

This is a non-issue. If you want to put a Roberts bbl on your 243 action, GO FOR IT! It will work fine.

Do a little research. It's amazing what this little round will do.

Here's a Federal premium 120 gr Nosler partition factory round sitting in my daughter's short action magazine:

Here's a couple of videos of the same round, plus a Hornady light magnum interlock factory round feeding from mag-to-chamber-to-ejecting:

(I hope this works-I'm not much of a techie)

The OP asked about a 257 Roberts into a short action. The Roberts conversion works, with room to spare. Maybe he already has dies and brass? The Roberts dies and brass are cheaper and easier to locate than the 250 Savage AI dies and 250 Savage brass.

Yes - that round is loaded shorter than I prefer to load them. You have a lot of bullet in that case. It will work fine in a short action with factory ammo or ammo loaded to factory specs but you loose some of what makes the cartridge great.

    My opinion only of course.

I suppose if you're going to run non-standard chambers in your barrel, it would work that way. A SAAMI spec chamber isn't going to give you diddly-more room to do that.

IMHO, a LA is better suited for the 257 Roberts if you hand load. I have both and prefer the LA.

    Re: 243 and 257 roberts

Been asking this question myself....Been told it CAN be done in my Rem Model 7...but should opt for a .260 or a long action if I stay with the .257bob. BUT I have seen several comments and experienced ppl here that say it works great out of their Savage Model 16FHSS.
