    Barrel help

I have a savage axis in 30-06 and was wondering if they ever made a small shank 7mm mag barrel or is this build never gonna happen? Any insight would be great. Thanks!!

Savage 110 barrels in 7mm Magnum are small shank. If you are wanting to go from 30-06 to a 7mm Magnum in an Axis...forget about it!

Not sure why this guy thinks it can't happen, I've actually built a 7mm wsm on an Axis. You can modify a long action bolt head or buy one from PTG. If you search you'll find a write up.

Good to know. I was curious if I could just get a new bolt. I was just under the impression that all magnum barrels were large shank.

Time to put your glasses on there sparky. "This guy" did not say it can't happen. Learn to read a bit more carefully. Makes for better responses. If someone wants to go with a 7mm magnum on an Axis, have at it. My opinion was "forget it". Still is.

If they make the axis in 7mm mag, I’m sure the bolts are available somewhere.

As far as I know the Axis has never been available in a magnum. It accepts the same barrel as the 110, which is available in the magnum calibers.

So, the stumbling block is the bolt face. PTG and EABrown both make magnum bolt faces for the 110 series. Hence back to the video posted above.

To me it would be much easier to find a 110 rifle/action and modify it. Or even find a used one in 7mmMag for the same price as a barrel and bolt work.

Axis is not made in 7mm Magnum so I would consider what charlie b said.

Yep. After almost been there and done that I most definitely agree!

Yeah it is. I tried to convert an Axis to 7mm magnum last year. After my "cowboy gunsmith" solved the bolt issue, well mostly, next up was stock and magazine. No way I was gonna use the OEM stock so that meant a long action Boyd's or equivalent. One surprise was the 270 Magazine...actually worked with 7mm ammunition...very little room to spare but it worked. End of the day it ended up being too expensive to overcome the novelty of doing it so I just gave it up.

Well darn. The axis I have has the wooden Boyd’s stock on it. I may just find a 270 or 280 barrel. I’m just wanting something a tad flatter than 30-06.

Might consider something in 6.5mm too. See you are in Georgia...I am down near Savannah for the winter. Put a stainless 22" 270 barrel from a weather warrior on one of my Axis actions this fall. With the OEM plastic stock accuracy was not that good....lot of muzzle jump.

This is the magnum bolt head that will fit an axis.

I’ve got a 6.5 gun now. Just me being picky and wanting something faster and flatter.

Just slap a 6.5-284 bbl on it, you’ll be shooting flat and fast. No other mods.

I'm having the same light primer strike issue as you. My 243 worked great for about 100 rounds than the problems started. I get either light primer strikes or pierced primers.
