Actually the Wylde chamber is a modified 5.56 chamber and there is a difference in headspace between a 223 and a 5.56 chamber. It started with the Canadians shooting teams as the profile for the bullets were different than the American bullets. The Canadian 5.56 was creating pressure problems so they changed the ball seat angle and length to accommodate the different profile. It actually fits the 69gr Sierra hpbt almost exactly. That was why it was adopted as the Wylde chamber in the AR15 rifles.

I am going off memory so the details might not be exactly right. Been a very long time since I thought about this.

The headspace is the same.......only the throat is different.

The headspace GO gauge for a 223 is 1.4646". For 5.56 it is 1.4638" More than just a throat change.

Absolutely!!!! .0008" Most people don't know how much that is. Roughly between 1/4th and 1/5th the thickness of a sheet of notebook paper. Ponder that.

Also remember that SAAMI spec's include a fairly generous tolerance.

    still not the same

There are gauges for 223, 223 wydle, 5.56. For some it makes a difference. Others not so much. For a tool and die maker it is HUGE

Once you consider the tolerence of total headspace and the tolerence in the gauges themselves, they are essentially the same.
