A&B 358 bbl question

I have a Stevens 200 in 22-250 and was wanting to rebarrel to 358 winchester for an elk rifle. On Midway USA they show an Adams and Bennett barrel built for a Savage 110 small shank with a 1-14" twist. Will this barrel work in this application and is that the desirable twist? Thanks, daddyhoney

You could screw that barrel on, but would not have a repeater. You'd also need to change to a magnum bolt head.

I'm pretty sure a .358 win is a necked up .308 so a bolt head swap would not be needed. However I'm not sure how it would feed, if a .22-250 box and .308 box are the same. I am also not sure on the twist rate needed for whatever bullets you want to shoot.

..338 fed. would be better...change out the box to .308 & let her rip. Bolt head would be fine...

I also think the 338 fed is a better round especially with 210 gr barnes bullets over RL17,
but nothing wrong with the 358 win either.
Both are based on the 308 shell, just necked up.

That said you can load a 358 win with a wide variety of pistol bullets so if that is what you are after
the 358 win might be better.

As far as I know there never was a 358 win mag, however there was a 350 rem mag.
I think it is a short action cartridge but not 100% on that.

All you need is to buy a barrel and screw it on, headspace it etc, which is probalby with a 308 go-gage.
Uses the same bolt head as a 22-250.

There is a 35 whelen which is basically a 35-06 long action cartridge.

No ... you want the 358Win barrel without a doubt! I have my second here, first was lopped to 20" and its still a portly rifle due to the heavy contour. The second is going onto a Stevens in 300WinMag for chambering to 358Norma where the profile and length is better matched. The 338Federal barrel being the same contour will be heavier again.

The ideal barrel profile is the #3 on the Mauser pre-fit, but it requires to be re-threaded and rechambered.

The 1:14" twist is fine, I prefer 1:12", but the 1:14" will handle anything up to 275gr-ish with aplomb. I've tried Woodleigh's 310gr and they will show evidence of tipping at 100 yards. But you don't need this weight pill! A 200gr Barnes TSX, Nosler 225gr Partition or any reasonable 250gr will do the work you require.

I now have both Go and No Go guages for setting headspace, believe it or not, the No Go is the handier of the two once you know what your doing, but I started with a Go and shim to set my headspace.

Will work fine, should feed fine from a 22-250 magazine, and all you need is the barrel and a 308 headspace gauge.

I have the A&B 358 win barrel and it works fine for me. From 158 grain 357 magnum bullets to 250 grain thumpers it works just fine - not match accuracy but better than minute of a hog/deer with about any load.

Did not realize barnes makes 357 110 and 125 gr bullets and there is a 100 gr cast bullet.
That would be interesting at about 3200+.

Ever hear of "leading"? I can't think of any cast lead bullet that would tolerate 3200 fps.

It would be good for plinker loads.

I just picked up a Stevens in .243 Win in trade. I've had good luck with the one I used when I built a .375 Ruger on a M70 but, I've been thinking though of trying one of 4D's prefit barrels over the A&B barrel however. I already reload the .358 as I have one in a Savage 99 that is why I'm thinking this cartridge over the .338 Fed.

Anyone else ever use 4D before or know who makes the barrels they use? Thinking a Douglas #2 profile will work well not much weight savings over the standard Savage taper (2.75 lbs vs. 3 lbs) but, if I cut it back to 20" it should increase the weight savings. I don't need a real tack driver but if I can do around an 1" with it I'll be very happy. Plus I can get a 1:12 or 1:10 twist from them easily.

4D Reamer Rentals LTD

It is a side company owned by Fred Zeglin's wife from what I understand. Fred is the guy who made all the Hawk cartridges. I've rented headspace gages a couple of times from them. I usually keep my rifles just one chambering so I don't need to buy the gages and since they were Wildcat cartridges I figured renting would be cheaper in the long run. Their barrels are over twice as expensive as the A&B barrels Midway sells. I'm guessing they are Douglas as that is what Fred uses the most of by what is web page states.
