my rifle will shoot 3/4 " groups 1/2" high 12 o'clock center 100 yards with hornady 130 grain sst, there factory ammo not braggin please don't take it the wrong way. now my reloads on the other hand reloader 22, 56 rains of powder all the cases trimmed to 2.53" , 130 grain hornady sst i did lightly crimp them are shooting 4" low and a 1" left , then i went to 57 grains of r22 same everything else and they grouped 3" low and 3/4" to the left. the 56 grain had about a 1 1/4" group and the 57 grain had about a 1" group. i looked at the cases fired and every thing looked all right i was just wondering does any body have a idea what powder hornady uses in the regular ammo not the superperformance stuff? i also measured the finished cases and they were exactly the same as the factory hornady

thanks i believe the book max is 58 grain, i'll try 57.5 grain and see if that will do it also i did not know if lightly crimp might be a reason why they are shooting lower. i also have a bottle of imr 4851 i was going to give that a try as well. thanks for replying

Hard to guess what powder Hornady is using to load with. Check there web site and they should list the velocity for your factory ammo. Some of the new powder like RL 17 will add a hundred or more fps with a 270. Looking I my Alliant book. I see Reloder 17 under a Speer 130gr running 3136 fps and RL22 at 2947. That's a 190 fps spread. Add that to you weren't at max load yet and there you have your trajectory spread.
1SHOT-not to hijack the thread... could you please share the details of that load? How many grains and OAL along w/what primers? Thanks!
...That load is 130gr Nos. BT's, Win. brass with 54.5grs of H4350 & CCI prs. set at +.015 off the lands...3.905" on my comp. Shot this 1 out of a cold bbl. to test the load before deer season last year...First round alittle high out of a cold bbl. but still on the money.. That's some mighty fine shooting 1shot! Looks like you have your combination dialed in! I fear for whatever animal finds itself in your cross-hairs.
I only use my 270 for hunting. I do not reload for my 270 because Hornady Light Mag's 140 BTSP shoot less than .250 groups @ 100yds. Since I only shoot this gun maybe 20 times a year, I didn't see the need to set up for reloading! Remington Accu-Bond 130 shoot about the same, FYI

55.5 grns imr 4831, rem primer, 130 grn b tip. 3/4 at 100 yds and 1 1/4" at 200 yds off sand bags.

Each bullet and powder type will cause the barrel to vibrate differently and effect the POI, factory ammunition is normally loaded to "LESS" than the "rated" chamber pressure and may use a powder that is unavailable to reloaders.

NOTE: It does absolutely no good for reloaders to try and mix Viagra with their favourite powder trying to get smaller groups.
(trust me it doesn't do anything for a limp barrel) ::)
I am amazed at the above post, but I must say MY barrell is not that limp when shooting!

The images I posted are computer generated images that over exaggerate barrel movement by a hundred times so you can see exactly how they move. Now read the link below and learn even more and remember this:
1. A person who reloads can change the amount of powder in the cartridge to "tune" his rifle and make it more accurate by changing the way the barrel vibrates.
2. A standard bolt action military rifle rifle doesn't get issued hand loaded ammunition (03 Springfield etc) therefore the military rifle is tuned to the issued military ammunition by varying the up pressure at the fore end tip to control barrel vibrations.
