    D**p throat?

I've had my Axis (old trigger) for a few weeks now With my first ladders of 50 and 55gr bullets, I did a .590 from a rest and bag. I was banging a 14x16" plate at 300 today. It was so calm even my 80yr old 22lr was shooting sub 2MOA at a 100! Continuing development, adding a $40 6-24x50 scope (what could go wrong?), a cheek weld pad, a cheap, even for Chinese, bi pod and I have the trigger down to 1 1/2lbs (no slams). When checking distance to the lands with a notched case (no primer), I showed 2.284ish. Seems high in my very limited experience. I'm loading 50s at 2.220 and 55s at 2.250. As I said, sub MOA with .060 jump!!! Load at 2.260? Thoughts would be appreciated.

22.250?? If so I noticed mine is very particular about type of bullets used.. regular 55gr fmj I would only get about 1/2 moa.. tested some Remington soft tip metal jackets and like clock work with 38 gr of h380 same hole. It's a 1/12 twist, oddly enough 62 gr penetrators did 1/4 moa and less. I would have any day of the week expected smk or hornady to give best but in the end rem 55 gr sp did it.

My apologies, I did not make myself clear. My concern was the length of the chamber. When I did the test load, the 55gr JHP BT w/cann, seated to a point where the top of the case (1.750") was halfway between the tail and the cannelure, an OAL of 'bout 2.284 necessitating a substantial jump. My question was/is, is this a normal chamber depth for an Axis? Ironically enuff, the 1/2 MOA I shot with my reload was a Horn 50gr SP. I may man up and spend a few bucks for some high 60, to low 70gr to use the 1/9 twist a wee bit farther out.

Someone else may disagree:P but my experience with savage (and I have many) is they have pretty tight chambers and throats. So if I'm u understanding you correctly, that would seem unusual.. at least from what I've experienced with savage rifles.

My Axis .223 has a throat almost as long as a .223 Wylde. 53gr Vmax has an OAL of 2.400" while 69gr Sierra TMKs are 2.427". And yet the gun has always been very accurate with factory ammo, especially the Vmax loads.

My Ruger American .223 hits the lands at 2.260" on the same 53gr Vmax while my 12FV is at 2.270"....so go figure.

Thank you gentlemen. I wasn't very concerned, since my initial test loads showed a lot of promise, considering the initial price. I like to try to educate my self with any project by asking those more experienced and lurking on forums like this. I'm shooting up some Dogtown 50s and when those get low, the Bobs 55s seem to have a lot of fans. When I return from working the summer in the Northern Plains, I'll spring for a few of those 'pricey' bullets with a little more heft. Tomorrow sees the fore stock(?) filled with some all thread and resin for stiffening and a little weight. Then a Vortex 6-24 Diamondback to replace the Twod, which isn't as bad as it sounds.

I picked up a axis used but unfired depending on the bullet it seamed to have a long thought. Was loading 77 nosler around 2.325 if I remember correctly. If you want a bullet that you can load close to or in the lands check out the hornady 52 gr hpbt. The ogive is pretty far forward on that one. I had to load them something like 2.175 and that was with .010 jam.

Not necessarily, some bullets are more jump space sensitive than others.. example on my 308, noslers seem to be very touchy about jump space but my SMK and ELD are much more forgiving without changing accuracy.. just my observation
