    Axis II XP 280 Ackley

Thinking about getting one. Is anyone shooting one? Likes and dislikes?

    Thanks for your replies

I’ve got a Savage 111 LWH build with custom 23” lightweight sporter barrel and Stockade Hunter stock. I kept the LWH walnut stock and upgraded plastic bottom parts to metal after adding multiple coats of Tru-Oil and epoxy bedding to the walnut stock. I get sub MOA 3-shot groups with handloads. l can match the performance of factory 7mm RM Hornady Precision Hunter ammo with handloads using 162 gr ELD-X bullets. Good retail 280AI brass is available. Factory ammo is expensive. Need to reload to unlock 280AI cartridge potential. No problems so far harvesting several whitetails, a mule deer and cow elk.

If I could only afford only one rifle for all-round big game hunting in the lower 48, then the Savage 110 Storm in 280AI with Accufit-Accustock would be on my list. No need to replace stock or upgrade plastic bottom parts with metal. No bedding required for excellent out-of-box accuracy. User adjustable stock and moderate recoil would makes it easier to shoot well verses a magnum caliber.

I have a Kimber 280AI. I really like it a LOT! I got some factory loaded 140 Nosler Ballistic tips on sale for $28 a box and have been reloading them ever since. Flat shooting, not bad recoil...what isn't there to like?

I built one on an old 98k Mauser a couple of years back. Killed a nice bull elk at 637 yards with 168gr Bergers. Great caliber with the only real downside being expensive brass. The nice thing though, with it being an Ackley the brass lasts forever

My first build was a 280AI. Criterion on 110 action. Shoot lights out! It's keeps right up with my 7mag. My most used load has been 140gr Sierra GK. But I'm starting to toy with 160ish grain bullets to really stretch it out.
I say go for it, you'll like it.

Thanks, I've got an old 110E 7mag and I'm trying to decide whether to build one or just buy a factory gun.
