Made my First 1000 Yard Shot... Twice!

First time ever hitting a steel target at 1000 yards (sorry if I was a little over-exuberant in the video, lol)! What makes this even more remarkable (for me) is that we had a gusty 10mph crosswind! The steel target was down low on the hill in this video, to the right of the power line tower (don't worry, I was well right of the tower and well below the power lines). At 1000 yards, I couldn't see the steel plate with the naked eye. It took about 3 seconds for the sound of the bullet hitting the plate to get back to us. I'm really liking (my first) bolt action rifle (I'm an AR-15 guy). 110 Desert Tactical in 6.5 Creedmoor. Scope is a Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 (MOA). Setting was 31.5 MOA up and 7.5 MOA left for wind drift.

1000 yards seems like it is in the next county your first time out. I don't care how much power your scope has.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

True! Can't wait to try it again when the wind isn't blowing. Maybe even push back to 1500 yards!

Anyone know of a good, reasonably price source for a larger steel plate? What size target to people usually use when shooting from 1000 yards and beyond?

At 1000 yards I like to use a 12" target. It is a little more than a MOA and not too terribly difficult to hit. At that distance an used disc blade is adequate to use since even though it is a poor grade steel nothing should punch through at that distance as long as it can swing when hit. Generally they are larger than 12" and are somewhat easy to come by depending on where you live.
If it is under 300 yards I like to use AR500 steel, because I sometimes use my 22-250 and speed is what damages targets.

What's a "used disc blade"? Sorry, not sure what you're referring to.

Nice shooting. I truly envy you folks out west that have large swaths of public land where you can shoot however far you like.

disc blade = farm plow disc used to break up the top few inches of soil.

Thanks! I have to admit as I'm sure others will... once you hit a target at 1000 yards... you're hooked! Great feeling of satisfaction! I'm fortunate to live in the desert with a lot of room. Next... 1300 yards! :)

FWIW I have aquired steel plates from local machine shops from where they cut out circles for various jobs. I get them from 4 to 24 inches and 1/2 to 2 inches thick. Usely free because most of the time they are in the scrap bin and their customer already paid for the complete sheet of metal.
