    another newbie with 99 questions:)

I just picked up this Savage 99 at a local auction. I think it's a cool design and I have wanted one since I saw a YouTube video on them.

    What I know:
    caliber 250-3000
serial 222489 on receiver and barrel
    c stamped on lever tang
    broken extractor
    custom stock and fore end
    possible incorrect magazine carrier

My questions for you fine folks are:
How does one ID the caliber of the carriers. I have seen a few on Ebay and Gunbroker but I cannot tell if they match. I want one with the round counter, which should be correct as my receiver has the little window.
How do you properly date these? the other website has the dating tool but do you go by the serial or the tang letter stamp. They seem to contradict each other.
It appears that the lug for the fore end is simply dovetailed in there. Does this mean I can purchase original furniture?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the rifle apart for cleaning and hopefully restoration to original, here are some pics.

Looking up ser# it was made in 1920. I'm sorry but that stock is butt ugly!! But that was the trend 50 years ago when everybody wanted a Weatherby look alike! Glad you are going back to original!

I do believe the carriers were round specific!

    Good luck with the restoration!

The early rotors were stamped with the caliber then for some reason they stopped.

Looks like someone ground down the foreend hook to make it accept the modified forearm, it should be sharper and the forearm should have a take down button on the underside. Does the back of the barrel where it meets the reciever have "OFF" stamped on it?

It was once a model 250-3000 2nd variation, would have came with a vertical lined trigger.

You might try Numrich gun parts for parts.

I just got Dan Royal's book on the '99s and haven't gotten beyond the history section. I'm sure some of the carriers will interchange with different calibers (maybe why they quit stamping the caliber on them). I'll be getting into that part of the book very soon and if I find something I'll pass it along.

No, it doesn't work like that. A 22HP might work with a 30-30 rotor but most of the time they are caliber specific.
