I have never shot a .243 at 1k but a 6.5, 7mm and .30 caliber tend to be more common for the task. I would think that a 6mm (.243) would have some disadvantages in windy conditions compared to the others but wind affects all bullets to an extent. You'll just have to be good at doping the wind.

About like the 308. Last month I was shooting with a 308 on my left and a 6XTC on my right. They were dialing in almost the same windage on their guns and my 6.5 was using about 2/3rds of their calls.

It takes the 7's to out shoot my 6CM at 1000 yards. a straight .243 you will have to run hard to try to keep up with the others.

    I have a VLP 243 and a 6.0x47 Lapua!

I have thought about bringing my 243 to the range and comparing it with the 6.0 @ 600yds plus!

The 6.0 & 6.5x47L are awesome! I know what my 243 will do up to 500yds! The Lapua's "WILL" reach out!

So why doesn't a 243 have a similar "long range" ballistic as the 6.0x47L?

John Whidden, current and three time NRA highpower champion shoots a .243. According to Whidden, when doping wind with 105 VLDs, use about 60% of the wind value you would use with a .308 standard match load.

My own Shilen barreled .243, and the Whidden built Broughton of my shooting buddys, amaze me at the 1000 yard mark! Shoot moly coated, pointed, VLDs or Nosler CCs with a heavy charge of N160 sighted 25" high at 100 yards.

My point exactly! So why is there such a big rush on the 6.0x47? I own both, it's just everyone loves to work with the 6.0 more so than the 243!

I was told today by a person the 6.0x47 case holds less powder! If you fill up a 243 case, you will have a barrell burner!

Look at the chart at the bottom of this page, it will explain a few things.
    http://www.6mmbr.com/243Win.html
I have shot a 243 at 1000 yards and done well and have been very pleased with the round. I switched to the 6x47 Lapua, because it is a more efficient round, it uses less powder to produce the same velocity's/results as the 243. I have found that the 6mm rounds have less (Most times about half, Like someone mentioned 60%) wind drift than the 308s. Looking at the chart aforementioned in this post there is no mention of the 6x47 lapua, but the 6xc (A round that is very close to the 6x47L round) rounds very close to the 243 in wind drift.

Back to your post a 8 twist 6mm round with a 107-108 bullets is a good combination. In my 6x47 lapua I find it easy to get 3000 FPS. I was able to get the 107 SMK is stabilize in 1 in 9.25 factory barrel 243 win, but if building a gun it would be a 8 twist.

It should work. You may not quite get to 3000fps though but it will depend on if you get a fast barrel. I think the 243 will top out right around 2800-2900fps with that bullet. Certanly the 243 is up to the task but I think alot of guys switch to the 6x47,6xc for their ability to do the same with less. Heck, AI the 243 and and that will increase your fps and help with the long shots.

Let's cut to the chase here. Can the .243 handle 1000 yards? http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/...-range-rifles/ Apparently it can! ;D
