    243 Axis Back in Action

Replaced the Weaver scope with a Simmons 3X12X40 I picked up real cheap. Simmons has their plant here in Thomasville Georgia near the Florida line. It will do for now until Weaver repairs their scope. After sighting in I tested two loads; 100 gr Sierra SP over IMR4166 and the Speer 100 gr BTSP over IMR4451. Long story short, The Sierra bullet over 34.2 grains of 4166 yielded 2810 fps and grouped three into .544" at 100 yards. The 100 grain BTSP over 40 grains of 4451 put three into .567" at 100 yards with a velocity of 2900 fps.

My Axis is finally coming around. Now to extend testing out to 200 yards. All test loads were loaded in once fired nickel FC cases and lit by Winchester LRPs. Primers looked good after firing. I did experience a few rounds that would not fire the first time but lit the second. All primers were seated to the bottom of the pocket. I broke the bolt down last night and gave it a good cleaning and light lube with TW25b.

Yes, season opens here in two weeks. Taking it out to 200 yards Sunday to make sure the loads I fired yesterday will perform at the longer range. I'll be hunting on a friend's land in South West Georgia where I shoot on his 1000 yard range. The range is closed during deer season and there's a number of tower stands at the edge of the range trees. Possible shots can go out as far as 600 yards. Have a good chance to drop some hogs too.

With a Speer 100 gr SP over IMR4451 it's grouping MOA at 200 yards.
