    7mm08 conversion to 6.5cm

    All,
I will be putting a new barrel on a savage lady hunter. From factory, it came with a 7mm08 barrel. The rifle shoots terrible and ive checked things like different scopes and tightening the bases. I'm tired of messing with it so I am just going to buy a custom barrel and fully bed the rifle with it. I think I am leaning towards going to a 6.5cm barrel but before I make that leap I wanted to know if the current box magazine I have for the 7mm08 (which I believe is just a 308 magazine) would also work for 6.5cm or would I need a new magazine as well or anything else I would have to do? Thanks!

I don't hand load but friends of mine do. Savages detachable box mags like on my model 10 are pretty good.

If you hand load 6.5 to full length potential you might want to invest in a mag conervsion. Long story short, 6.5 CM fits in 308 mags.

Let me see if I am understanding what you are saying...You are saying the 308 mags (used for 7mm08 as well) will work fine for the 6.5cm as far as holding the cartridges in place and allowing them to properly cycled forward into the barrel by the bolt...etc. However, there is some sort of conversion which can be done, to allow you to seat the bullets much longer...if I desired that. id think the 308 cartridge length is longer than 6.5cm cartridge, so in theory would allow for plenty of room to load bullets a little longer. Is that what you mean?

The 7mm-08 is based on the .308 Win case

The 6.5 Creedmoor is based on the .30 T/C case, which was based on the .308 case.

It will fit with no modifications.

.308 on the left, 6.5 on the right. (.30 T/C center)

I can load out to 2.900" overall with my Savage magazine (.260 Rem, but the same fits the 7mm-08 & 308 Win according to the blister pack my spare came in). That's 0.10" over SAAMI overall and handy to have. My longest loaded cartridge is 2.890" with a 0.010" jump to the rifling. Very handy - thank's Savage!
