170 30-30

This is my first post, so try not to laugh.....I have two Savage rifles, one a 1918 22 HP take-down with a second 25-35 barrel and fore-arm I made up. I don't use the HP but love the 25-35.

My question concerns my Mod.170 30-30...I picked this up many years ago from a chap I worked with for the princely sum of $30, fired a few rounds through it, but rarely used it.
My questions are....it won't lock the slide when racked forward...can this be repaired ??....also are these actions strong enough to be re-barrelled to say 35-30 or 375 ?
Any helpful information would be gratefully accepted but please don't tell me to buy this or that instead, thats not why I asked the question.

Sounds like the slide lock or spring is out of adjustment or the whole thing needs to be replaced. Part#44. Numrich has it, get the whole assembly. As far as the conversion, the .375 runs at 52,000 CUP, 10000 more than the .30-30, so I'd say no. I also have an 1899 take down in .25-35 and it shoots great, loves the 117 grain round noses.

Thanks Al, I was thinking 35-30, 35 Rem. cases are too hard ( impossible ) to get down here. Depending on how hard the barrel is to remove, it could become a switch barrel

Hey Yumastepside, I have a 170 30-30 I had rebored and rifled to 38-55 win but I'm running at 375 win loads for 200 gr Sierra flat point with no problems. Running them at 2350 FPS and I'm getting 1" or better groups at 100 yds!!!! I found out win brass in the 38-55 and 375 win are set at the length called for of the 375 so that brass is the same and it is showing no signs of pressure. With the pump acoin this rifle is lightening fast. Oh it's legal to hunt with in Ohio deer gun season now too!!!

I had a 375 in the Marlin when they first came out and I loved it! ( never a big fan of the 30-30, grew up with 303's and 30-06's ) Let me get this straight.....the rifle is set up as a 38-55 BUT you are using 200gr 375 load data.....is this right?

Not sure about your data. .375 cases are 2.009" and .38-55 cases are 2.080", that's quite a difference.

What I got Al was about 1.9mm difference, but thats not a big issue, the main thing with "proper" 375 cases is that the webs are a lot thicker for the higher pressures resulting in less case capacity. Larger capacity cases with the same load should result in lower pressure........theoretically.....

Thanks Al.....I'm still tossing up between the 38-55 and the 35-30.
I like the idea of the classic 38-55, but also the versatility of the 35-30 being able to use pistol bullets. The deciding factor here in Australia will be barrel cost, no one does barrel re-boring in this country at a reasonable rate, the ones that do re-boring charge more than a new barrel.
With most new barrels above the $450 mark, too much for an old beater rifle, I tend to look for cheap take off barrels on line.

yes im using the 375 data as my barrel is bored to 375, and yes on the brass but this is with winchester brass, winchester cuts their 38-55 and 375 brass to 375 cut length. guess its a liability thing. but any way look at the loads for 38-55, in a modern rifle with 250 gr bullets you can stop just about anything. you can go up tp 300+ grain bullets in lead!!!
the load out of mine with the 200 gr sierras is so accurate and my brass is showing no signs of pressure. look at buffalo arms loads for the 38-55 and the 375 youll be surprised.
im glad i went with the 38-55. oh in case you didn't know, the 30-30 win is simply a 38-55 win necked down.

I'm familiar with the 30-30 line of cartridges, I have a 22 HI-Power, 25-35, 7-30 Waters, a 30 -30 and had a 375Win. plus some Herretts and a cartload of 30-30 based wildcats ( Martini Cadets are very common down here )...I'm a bit of a rimmed case freak....375x2 1/2 flanged nitro express, 7x57r, 9.3x74r, 7.62x54r, 303B, 405 Grenadier.....

nice i would like to have a nice martini henry, and i have a wwII 1943 marked mauser 98 im thinking of rebarreling in 7X57 and putting in a bishop stock i found years ago. oh did i mention i also have a 170 in 35 remington??
