Model 64 magaziine "Fixes" and accuracy

Hi - I've owned a 64 for about 3 years and have gone thru all the troubles we all have seen, if you shoot a lot. My mags have only had a few hundred rounds in each (I have 3) but the soft metal keeps wearing down. I've filed and bent them for all these years but I finally got fed up and emailed Savage CS and they -after 6 weeks - sent me 3 new mags (worth about $100 CDN) which I haven't had a chance to try yet. However, a couple weeks ago I took my "Best" mag and measured the feed lips with a digital caliper. I then filed and pounded the other two to match those specs and they fed fine this last trip to the range Sunday. Step One is to Lightly file the lips smooth. Then use a small hammer to peen them to the correct specs. I have made a document with these specs - 'cause I'm sure I'll have to do this often - and I'll attach it. I hope this will save some of you a bit of stress- and save $$. I also made a mag release by drilling a small hole in the OEM and fit a piece of coat hanger into it, secured with JB. And I extended the charger with a small bolt threaded into the OEM, then filed it 'sorta' smooth. Both things work very well, and look really bubba . Finally, I'm using a 4x scope and have some 1/2" groups at 25 yards. Not great, but good enough for now. I plan to put on a better scope sometime. The Range pic is with a diff gun in the 'Group Therapy' sled.
Good luck with the info I've collected.
Ed

SAVAGE 64 USED MAGAZINE SPECS ( 10/09/2018 )

Measurements of magazine lips ( ALL edges of lips need to be lightly filed smooth )of Mag #3, which was the most reliably feeding at range.

Digital Caliper used in Metric Mode [IMG][/IMG]

A = 4.96 mm
B = 6.3 mm
C = 5.75 mm
D = 5.68 @ Shoulder of Upward slope
E = 5.86 @ Past Shoulder
F = 6.10 @ Feed Ramp

When magazines #1 and #2 were ‘bent’ to match above measurements of the functional Mag #3, the magazines functioned properly at Range on 10/21. On 10/22/2018 I received 3 replacement magazines from Savage CS.

The specs of ‘NEW’ mags are as follows :
Magazine #
4 5 6
A = 5.15 5.22 5.28
B = 5.63 5.77 5.78
C = 5.75 5.87 5.88
D = 5.42 5.66 5.57
E = 5.77 5.97 5.97
F = 5.86 5.92 5.86
G = 36.00 35.98 36.08 * G & H are measurements of the magazine detents that lock
H = 35.65 35.25 35.46

These numbers are BEFORE USE and the paint/finish is untouched. It may be that this will wear off and give more consistent measurement results after being used several times. G and H index the magazine in the Well. (To be continued Â…)
