111 LRH in 300 Win or 110 in 6.5 Creed

    Hello everyone,
New to the forum and new to long distance shooting. I have a savage 10 P-SR in 308 and the farthest I've shot with it is 300 yards. I am taking a class in Nov that will teach me how to walk out to 1500 yards so I wanted to pick up a new rifle. My local shop is selling the 111 Long Range Hunter in 300 WinMag for $400 brand new. I was set on picking up a 6.5 Creedmoor for either the 110 Tactical (I believe around $700) or going all in with the 10 Ashbury Precision (about $1100). I've done some research, but not being behind the calibers or rifles I wanted to get some other opinions. I assume the 300 and 6.5 will both work well at that range. It will be mostly target shooting. Is the 111 LRH price too good to pass up or is the 300 WM caliber not worth the extra cost over time, etc. Thank you in advance for any help.

Both calibers will make it to 1500 yards. When deciding on a cartridge for long range shooting, you will need to define what exactly your yardage will be and what the bullet will need to do once it gets down range. I plugged both calibers into a ballistic calculator on my phone.

The 300 win mag 190gr SMK at 2950fps performance: 1000 yard will need 28.11MOA and have 885ft-lbs of energy
1500 yards will need 61.96MOA and have 462ft-lbs of energy
    crosswind: 1000 yards: 6.21MOA
    crosswind: 1500 yards: 12.26MOA

    6.5 creedmor 140gr eld-match at 2780 performance: 1000 yards will need 28.79MOA and have 741ft-lbs of energy
1500 yards will need 59.14MOA and have 408ft-lbs of energy

    crosswind: 1000 yards: 5.15MOA
    crosswind: 1500 yards: 10.01MOA

Both loads could probably be juiced up for more FPS but you get the picture. The smaller 6.5 will have roughly the same drop, and have the same kenetic energy, and have roughly the same wind deflection characteristics. I am aware that there are better bullets now for the 300 win mag, and you could use the 143gr eld match for the 6.5 creedmor or really juice the loads. But the results will be the same. The 6.5 creedmoor will get the job done using less powder, less barrel ware, and far less abuse on your shoulder. If you buy your own ammunition and live in a state where you can order ammo, then you can get 6.5 creedmoor for a little more than a dollar a shot: https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...oducts_id/1042
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

If it was me, I would get the Long Range hunter 300 WM, and use it for a hunting rifle. That deal is just too good to pass up. I have the Long range hunter in 7mm Rem Mag and love it!

I would then get a 6.5 Creedmoor for target shooting. Seriously, the 300 isn't going to be a rifle that you can shoot all day, like the 6.5 Creedmoor is. IMO the 6.5 Creedmoor is a whole lot better for target shooting. If you can afford it, I would go with the 6.5 Creedmoor LRP after you pick up the 300 WM... but I like the HS precision stock more than the ashbury stock. If you can't quite afford that kind of money, the Cabelas 10T-SR is very nice for the money, just lighten the trigger and shoot it as is from there, and you will be under $1000 for the two combined.

Good luck! Don't let that 300 LRH get away!

Thank you for the info. Yes, I was all set on 6.5. I do like the Model 12 and the 10 GRS, but they have the Ashbury in stock there and I can get an extra $100 off during the sale on that model. For me, as long as it has the accutrigger, ill probably enjoy it right away. When I saw the 300 LRH for $400 (selling for so cheap because they over ordered them), I thought the same thing; how can i pass this up? But will i be wasting $400 if Im going to get a 6.5 one day anyway I've heard great things, but as of now I do not hunt. Its something Ive always wanted to do and will get into, but not doing currently. If I went through with the 300 I would be a step ahead of that. How is the stock on the LRH? Anything worth switching too for a reasonable price? I have used an XLR chassis in the past and like them; but I really think the Boys At One is nice too for the price. So many options. I have a nice Vortex in the box waiting to go on something regardless.

Get that Win Mag and look forward to getting a 6.5 CM Barrel as an aftermarket prefit.

If you don't hunt, then it just doesn't make sense to get the 300. If you are just getting one gun, make it the better target rifle, the 6.5 Creedmoor. The stock on the LRH is just fine, it is an accustock with an adjustable cheek rest and is very nice for a heavy hunting rifle. I just don't think that the 300 is in your best interest right now.

    I have a 111 LRH in 300WM and a Model 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor.
I will never shoot the 111 LRH at distance just to shoot it. The LRP is a pleasure to shoot

I think your shoulder would appreciate the 6.5.
