About a year ago I bought a model 12 single shot target action, ordered a Shilen barrel in 6BR, and just recently bought a Savage F-class laminated stock. Went to put it together and the trigger hole spacing on the trigger guard is 3 1/2" and the stock is 3". I called Savage and they are sending me the right trigger guard. Went to my friends gun shop where I purchased it and all the Savage rifles he has in stock the trigger guards measure 3", the dual port target action that he has for sale has the same 3 1/2" trigger guard. Can anyone explain this, sorry for the long post.
What is the action screw spacing on your action? The stock?
There were some differences and you may have issues with 2 of the action screw holes aligning.
Some of the competition stocks had a 4.40" screw spacing and some had a 3.44" spacing.
If I am not mistaken the rear screw (front trigger guard screw) was moved forward making the trigger guards different from the two actions.
The dual port target actions use the 3.44 spacing as well as the Palma model, thus requiring the long trigger guard. However, over the last several years, I has seen some bastard configurations come out in just the precision target actions. Technically, the only PTA that used the long trigger guard is the dual port, all others used the standard trigger guard. The Palma rifles used the long guard but were only available in a complete gun. I've seen left and right port PTA's come with the short screw spacing (3.44) that used the long guard, but these are a result of a screw up in the routing. Some of these were packaged with the wrong trigger guard to begin with. The long trigger guard originated from the model 40.

All the holes in the action line up perfectly with the F- Class stock except the trigger guard the front screw hole spacing is to long. They are sending me the correct trigger guard. was just trying to figure out where that longer trigger guard went to. I think you guys answered my question. Thanks
Yep. The 3.44" actions used a longer trigger guard as the rear action screw is .500" forward of its normal position.

Well, .480" actually, don't know why I based my number off 4.440" action.
4.400"-3.440"=.960"
.960"/2=.480"
No....it's .460". The difference is not an even split. I have factory prints of the action and the trigger guards.

That seems odd. but either way, its only used on the 3.440" Target Action.
It's also used on the model 40, the Mark II & 93 rimfires.

You are correct, I wasn't even thinking about the rimfires.
