Any start load for the Sierra should work.

Sierra data for 175 hpbt is like start 36.3 max 41.7. Hodgen start is 42 max at 45 compressed...just wandering what hornady data showed sounds like folks are running higher than the sierra Data for the 168 and 178 hrdy.bullits

    With the 178hpbt I used to run 42-44grs of imr4064 in a 26" McGowen barrel. I think at 44 I was getting 2700fps.

You can use the Hodgdon data for the similar Sierra bullets. Have done it for years and when I went to the 178 AMAX my load was exactly what my 175 SMK load was and then BTHP was within .1 grain.

That Hornady book is super conservative. My load with Hornady brass and the 178 BTHP is 44grns and that is what it was with Lapua brass too. If you stop at 42 and change you are leaving performance on the table if you aren't hitting pressure. The Hodgdon load is 45grn max for the 175 SMK and Win brass, which has a larger internal capacity and why my load is 44grns as my old Win brass load was 45grns with Varget. The max with the 168 is 46grns.

Thank you all so much ..I have used hodgen data before seems closer to real world.but being in know from others is a huge +.couple friends running 43.5 and 44 varget in there model 10's..I'm still going to work up charges from 42 ..(better safe than sorry )for both the 168 amax and the 178 hpbt with varget.been running varget in my varmit ar and 69 hpbt green box people and its a lazer on my good days..thanks again and I lov this site.by the the 308 is the model 12fv everybody knows about from cabelas it really likes the fgmm 175... average .75 for 5 but might do better need more trigger time.

I'm running a swfa 12x moa on both ar and the model 12..20 moa game reaper mount on the savage so far so good there(nice optic for the price )and I to will be useing hornady brass to start i have 200 or so fc cases some from fgmm match some from hunting ammo a friend gave me. vital shok I think ..I don't see diff from gmm or the other other than blue mark on primer from the gold medal.but don't look like fc rates to well on hear or elsewhere.

Better to stick with the Hornady as the Federal brass is a little soft.

I've been loading 175gr barnes match burners with gadget and found a node at about 2680fps. I know that's not the same bullets you're using but those are my experiences with Varget and 175s in the 12fv

Don't think the 178 BTHP is a slouch. Here is my 300 yard group when I was load testing as you can see from the 44 in the upper corners. I shot the first one and then adjusted down and shot 4 more. That load was at 2710fps in the 22" barrel. I shoot the same load in my current 20" and it's at 2690fps.

Hornady brass isn't much better, but if you got it use it up. Then go Lapua.

For what it's worth I tore down a Hornady Black 168 A-Max. It had 42.5 grains of a stick powder that didn't look like either the 4064 or Varget I have around the house. And while the brass is labeled Hornady it was a lot heavier than the Hornady Match brass I have lying around.

I have used a lot of Hornady brass and it's much better than Federal. Holds up better.
