    Removing the barrel and headspace check


    savage axis .223

    When i remove the barrel do i need to reset or check the headspace on reinstall ??

    Yes. I am new this this but I believe I am right. Have read here that you can make some reference marks which would get things close, but still check with gauges.

    Same barrel? Same bolt head? You just might get away with it but being that you're that close, CHECK IT and reset as needed.
    And "close" only counts with hand grenades and A bombs.
    Oz never gave nothing to the Tin Man, that he didn't already have.

    Always. Every time you screw a barrel into an action, always check head space.

    This every time. If the barrel ever turns in the action even the slightest amount. Check and double check with no-go. If you change the bolt head the same thing applies. Check headspace.

    You can use both gauges and sized cases. Always use a shim on the go if I don't have a no go.

    Close the bolt on the action, screw the barrel down until it bumps the bolt head. Back off a quarter turn, install gauge and close bolt, adjust to contact with shoulder and back off a small degree of rotation. Tighten nut and check with gauges.
