A short action right eject push feed bolt head. Why does yours not fit? Does the firing pin not fit if you install it?(The nose too long)

Your bolt shroud may have a dimple in it. The older bolts had a slot in the that lined up with the dimple. I have just ground off the dimple inside the shroud and am good to go.

    Bolt won't close.
Bolt head dimensions, 308 vs. my 223:
    oal, 1.435 vs. 1.385
pin hole front edge to face, 1.0 vs. 1.060
locking lug thick, .449 vs .5

Try to close the bolt without the barrel. Then screw the barrel on and headspace.

The gap between the actions lug abutments and the face of the barrel is space for one barrel. There is only .010 gap between the face of the bolt and the barrel. A longer bolthead will hit the barrel before the lugs can be rotated into place.

Here is some bolt head data.

It seems that I need a short action, 7/16" lug, right hand bolt face, is that correct?

The 223, short action, right eject is correct. Length is not pertinent although it is all you will find from Savage parts. It is critical to understand that when you head space everything should fall into place.
