    firing pin travel

is there a way to find out if my savage model 10T is over cocking. has anyone reground the ramp on the bolt body to ease the bolt lift. what is the firing pin fall dimension, i am trying make the bolt lift easier, so if the fall is too much i want to regrind the firing pin detent and match the ramp so its less aggressive

When you lighten the spring by backing off on the cocking piece, it shortens the firing pin travel and reduces effort to cock. It also reduces the energy. The cocking ramp can only be reduced enough that when cocked, the sear can still catch the trigger on the hand off (bolt close). Take too much off and the trigger cant reset. The hand off can be smoothed by making the sear travel on the hand off minimal. In my opinion this would require a 4 axis on your mill. The profile of the detent area can be modified to make bolt closing smoother as well. I'm not sure how Fred does it. Shortening the BAS and using a center contact point like some of the bolt lift kits can accomplish some improvements on opening.

Operate the bolt slowly you will feel several things going on, Many you won't even notice until you start observing. All of it need work. You could let Fred do it and it will be right the first time.

Here are some articles/videos for your reading pleasure.

Edit: I posted links to a YT video and a gunsmith who makes a bolt lift kit, but it seems they were not allowed to be posted here. So you'll have to do some research on your own.

Actually, if you had hit the return button between links rather than having three run together as one the link for the video it might actually have shown. Don't worry, I fixed it for ya. Maybe next time check for your own mistakes before accusing others of removing things from your post.

My apologies. Not accusing anybody of anything, Jim, but do realize that you do depend upon marketing dollars, so just assumed it was related to that.

That aside, I do hit the return button to drop the links below one another by habit, although I had no good reason as to why I do it that way. Perhaps I did that differently this time. What can I say, old age ain't for sissies. Anyway, as always, appreciate your help and btw, just upgraded my membership too, just cause you guys are the best.

Back to the OP's question. I'd previously adjusted my cocking piece as per instruction on lift kit. Lift was much better, however I was getting the occasional fail to fire. So yesterday I screwed the cocking nut IN one turn and today had no FTF's at the range. Still very good bolt lift, so fingers crossed...
