    223 twist

Is my axis in 223 a 1-9? And for the handloaders out there, what's everyone's favorite bullet/powder and oal for 69gr+?

you can use a cleaning rod with bore brush on it and a ruler to verify your actual bbl twist rate. with the brush in to the chamber and the rod in the bbl handle at the muzzle end, begin pulling the rod out. when the brush is engaged in the rifling near the chamber end mark the rod at the muzzle for distance with a ring all the way around the rod and then a straight line to indicate rotation so like at the top of the bbl. now continue to pull the rod out until the rotation mark again lines up at the top of the bore and measure from the ring around the rod to the muzzle, 1 full turn in how many inches?

seems like Savage used various twist rates over years of production the easiest way to be sure is to check what you have in your hands rather than trust hearsay

not exactly what your looking for but 25.4 gr. of varget w/ cci 450's pushing a 62 gr. Hornady FMJ got me some 1/2 MOA, 3 round groups and does 1 MOA 10 round groups. Not bad for the cheapest Hornady bullets i've found.

My axis HB really likes the 69gr SMK loaded with 25 gr of Varget and a COL of 2.260". It likes the 52gr SMK and 25.5 gr of Varget and COL of 2.250" even better.

Mine also likes 25.5gn Varget and 69gn SMK. The Nosler 69gn also does well. Less than 1 MOA. H335 was not as good.

The recent mfg Axis barrels are 1:9 twist so 70gn is about as heavy as you can go.

Mine likes 69 TMKs with 25.0 Varget in Hornady brass at 2.260". With thicker brass (like Starline) this load is too hot and I drop it down .5 grains. They also like 53 V-Max with 25.5 Varget in Hornady brass.

I use 69 grain nosler custom comp projectiles with 23.5 grains of cfe 223. shoots 1" groups at 200 all day. working on imr4895 fine tuning my loads for that powder but right now im between 23.4-24.3. 23.9 shot .45" 4 shot group at 100 yards. working on the barrel harmonics +- .4 grains from there.
