7mm 08 and rate of twist

My model 16 shoots 120gr bullets like a laser but I haven't found a 140gr that will do better than 2". I can't find any current info on twist rate. I see where savage switched to a slower rate a while back. Like an 1:11. The industry standard is a 1:9.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Could be a 1:9.5.

There was some discussion about this a little while back. Not sure if it was made a sticky? I don’t believe that the 7mm-08 had a bbl code determined yet. And usually they are stamped just ahead of bbl threads so probably not visible unless you pull the barrel.

But you can measure the twist rate with a cleaning rod a tape measure and a sharpie.

Just confirmed with savage....1:9.5 This confirms what the cleaning rod says.

I get that the stock on this gun sucks. Maybe the recoil impulse of the 120gr @3000fps is less than the 140gr@2800fps?

I have a model 11 that will shoot 140 gr Sierra BTSP with 46.5 gr IMR4350. Will group around 2" at 200 yds. Same rifle shoots a 2+" group with Remington Factory 140 gr. Core Lokts. Picky rifle.

I have a 7-08 with the 1:11.5 twist and it shoots 139 Hornady Interlocks into nice little groups.

It could simply be that your barrel doesn't like those particuar 140's. Or, that load with the 140's.

I have a Model 14 Classic 7mm-08 with a 11.5 twist. It was built in 2005. I am using a 139 Hornady SST bullet over 45.8 grains of W760 in a Remington Peters case using a Winchester large rifle primer. I can cover a 5 shot 100 yard group with a quarter.
