    223 ai oal

Just picked up a mdl 11 in 223 for a build in 223 AI. I see that the longest OAL I'm going to be able to get in this magazine will be 2.30". I don't have the barrel yet but it will be a 1-8 twist to maybe play with some heavy bullets. Are the aftermarket barrels throated longer than the factory ones? Already sold off the old sporter barrel. I don't want a single shot. Anyone else have this problem and if so how did you correct it?

You should be able to tell the smith how you want it throated. I would just think if they throat it short then you'll lose powder capacity especially with the longer bullets.

Well if he loses powder capacity, whats the point to the AI?
Why not a 22x250 or a 220 Swift and call it a day?

Improving the .223 only gains you 1/2 grain in water capacity.....that's why P.O. Ackley never done it, he knew it was a waste of time.

Got the barrel and turns out I have the opposite problem, this thing is throated way too short. 40 gr Vmax seated to the lands is only 2.20" oal.

On the plus side I had a .40" 4 group average at 100 yds with fireforming loads.

The way to fix that (OAL restriction) is use a stagger feed action, or convert to AICS style single stack which feed AI's perfect.

This is a staggered feed. AI loads feed horrible and forget about hollow points.

Capacity increase is not great but, since I went AI, I hardly ever have to trim brass.

I think I have my feeding problem fixed. I pulled the barrel off and chamfered the chamber with my case deburring tool and polished it with flitz. Loads slide right in now. Woo-Hoo!
