12FV Chassis, or just buy a 10 BA?

Honestly curious what you guys think. If you bought a 12FV in 308 or 6.5, why put an expensive chassis on it when the 10BA comes ready to go for a total of $900?

Maybe my price is off, but I’ve been eyeing the MDT for my 12 and can’t justify the price after seeing what some online retailers sell the 10BA for.

The MDT gen 2 LSS -XL costs $500 for the chassis alone, then you add mags, butt stock, and grip and you’re easily exceeding the cost of the 10. I guess if you have some AR’s and can do some swapping the price is just the chassis, but at $500 you’re still approaching a 10BA.

I’m just looking for an honest opinion since I’m currently debating this exact scenario. Is the 10BA less than stellar or something? I’ve read some pretty good reviews.

    Thanks!

I bought a mdt-less chassis used with a FAB industries buttstock already on it for $200. If you take you time and look around the deals can be found... So far my 10FCP-SR and chassis is $550 out of pocket. In the end, mine with optics will be under $900 as I got a screaming deal on a scope over the holidays after the savage sale and rebate.

Some buy them because they look tactical or cool. Do you need a chassis or do you just want one. A chassis is kind of personal in the way it fits. I found I really like the AI chassis but some of the others not so much. "Tune-ability" is something to consider. Try them before you buy them.

    12FV on sale $370 less $100 rebate = $270
    MDT LSS $400 less 10% sale = $360
    MDT polymer mag $40 less 10% = $36
    Hogue grip from MDT $20 less 10% = $18
    Brownells: buttstock, cheek riser,
receiver extension, castle nut = $78
    Total =$762
    MDT had a coupon.

How does that LSS work with the long Varmint barrel? No offense, but it looks goofy. I see the reason why they suggest the LSS XL for longer barrel guns.

If it works for you great. No offense meant.

If I were to buy the same set-up with the XL chassis I’m into a 10BA.

It’s a little long, but growing on me. My original intent was to cutnit down to 18” or 20” and thread it. Now I just might buy a 18” thread barrel. I believe the 10BA fore end is pretty close to the LSS.

Got the 10BA in 6.5 creed and what a deal this thing is. Started shooting 3/4 moa on day one with federal factory ammo. With reloads as developed, 1/2 moa. Was shooting less than 1 moa today prone at 200. Admittedly it's got really good glass on it (Nightforce) but hell it shoots damn good. Don't forget this action is blueprinted from the factory, I believe that's a major factor here. For less than a thou, goddam. Only downside is the buttstock, it's useable but not bag friendly. Put a Luth-AR on mine. I recommend the Stealth and 6.5.

For me it just happen to fit in with a couple of other projects. I had the Magpul PRS left over from an AR Grendel. Also, bought a 6.5 Creed X-Caliber barrel from 12 VLP. So I pulled the Creed barrel off the 12VLP put the original 22-250 barrel back on it and sold it. Which paid for my chassis. As far as need for a chassis, ya they're pricey but improved accuracy and for the ergonomics make well worth the price. Why not just buy a stealth? There's a lot of satisfaction in putting one together myself.
    Cost?
After sale, rebate and selling the factory barrel from the Cabelas 12FV I've got $70 into the action.

    $70. Action
    $300 X-Caliber barrel
    $180 Magpul butt stock
    $500 MDT chassis
    $60. Magazine
    $25 BCM grip

    $1135 total
