Don't yet have a 7mm. Looking for opinion on 7mm LRM in a Savage long action. (If it skews answers, I have a Rem 700 long action to use too).
In visiting a WI barrel maker, I side tracked and asked his opinion of 28 Nosler, he shrugged - so that's open to interpretation or timely itch. In reading about the LRM on another forum the LRM was described as manageable which has a nice ring to it.
I took apart an unfired 7mm Rem Mag, so not overly interested in that route, nor 7-08 because I have things that match performance. Don't plan on using a brake. Am all for the 28 Nosler if it is the modern thing to do in a Savage long action. If someone called it manageable, that would help. LRM looks like a smaller case which I'd accept. Not looking to hot rod.
As for intents and purposes, deer and paper, or like my running shoes, infrequent use to little effect, but I still own a few pair.

I just went down this road in search of a long range 7mm. After weighing brass costs, die costs, and performance I went with a 7mm-300 win mag. I have the barrel on order with Apache just hoping it shows up sometime this spring so I can start to play with it. I did buy custom rcbs dies for $150.00.

If I were to choose an extended long range rifle, ie. 2000 yard rifle, I would go with a 7mm practical as others have suggested simply because the brass cost is that much cheaper. The issue I have with say the 28 Nosler or the 338LM is the brass cost and availability of components. I know I can get 300 win mag brass anywhere. 28 Nosler, 338LM, 300 RUM, and cartridges in that range have brass that is very hard to get and when you can find the brass, the cost for that brass is extremely expensive. Sure the dies for 7mm practical are expensive, but the cost saving for the brass will more than make up for it. If you want to use a Savage action, I would look for a RUM savage action, and then use a large shank barrel to match with the threads. You should be able to get a long enough magazine well if you want to use the rifle as a repeater.

I have both a 28 Nosler and 7 LRM. They both have manageable recoil and great velocity. The recoil reminds me of a 7mm mag, but I am bigger so a smaller guy might notice the difference between the two. You said "Not looking to hot rod." with this knowledge I wouldn't own a 28 Nosler. It is a rocket and why burn lots of powder and barrel to shoot a deer and paper? I saw pictures of 2 cow elk taken by my coworkers with a 28 Nosler at 700 yards. Both cows were hammered! The poor deer would be gone with a 28, lol. The 7mm practical would be cheaper and isn't that far off in velocity from a 28 Nosler. Good luck
For the 7mm I am several months ahead of myself as I have a 270 and (2) 6.5’s incomplete. But the posts did get me to the Cabelas used rack this morning. Saw a Savage 300 win mag stainless @$450 and Tika 3 338 win mag @ $550 and a Rem 700 7mm Ultra stainless @ $950. As standard would each of these flip gate magazines handle 180 and 195 grain for the Practical or 28?
