If it has one, try removing the front scope base screw. If your new barrel has threads that are a little taller than the old barrel, you may be into the screw. Correctly made machine threads should not have to be lapped to work.
When using a normal Savage prefit are you guys using lapping compound on the threads to "fit" the barrels on the Axis actions? I've tried one of my pull Savage barrels to see how hard it is to screw on. It went almost all the way before it got tight. I didn't try to get it to go in any further than I could get it by hand!
I have a Savage pull off coming for my Axis...looks like I'm going to barrel it and stiffen the original stock so I can use it as is. I will got from there...make up my mind of I'm going to true the receiver/cut it down to use a recoil lug.

I put a model 10 barrel in mine, no problem.
Every time I’ve had issues I’ve found blast media in the threads. I’ve done several axis rebarrels and never had an actual thread issue.

Thanks guys...when I tried to screw the barrel on I was a bit timid to over tighten it with out knowing for sure if I should force it.
Well I screwed the 6.5x284 Savage pull off barrel onto the Axis action. Looks like the 6.5x284 will feed fine in the 30-06 mag. That surprised me!
Everything went together fine. The difference in thread cut didn't seem to cause any issue.
Loaded some ammo for it too...still need to work on the Axis stock. It's going to be replaced but I will use it until I get a replacement.
Nice! What model did it come off of?
It was a Model 11.
What is the difference between the 110 and the 111?
Basically
Earlier models: matte blue vs. gloss blue.
Later models: the replacement of a zero with a one.

LOL...I thought it would have real meaning...something more serious!
The barrel does match the action so that's good.
Thanks
