    PTA short action 300wm

So I have a new pta I bought for $500 and deciding what iam going to do with it. Thinking I want to build a 300wm to shoot heavy bullets. Anyone have any experience on building one on a short action and how long of coal is possible?

Loading won't be the problem, will the PTA eject a 300 WM case? If you ever have to eject a loaded round, you'll need to remove the bolt

is that because of the smaller ports on the pta?

No... it's because of the shorter bolt travel.

The bolt head for a magnum short action has been like finding hens teeth in the past. You may find a savage unit, you may have to buy one from PT&G or you could make one from a long action bolt head by trimming the nose. If you make one out of a long action you might as well remove the radius so you can move the spring washers location. The original short action piece is a little longer which will effect your firing pin protrusion. From there you will need to consider your approach to reducing the spring tension/preload after you get the protrusion set and still maintain the cocking distance. It is single shot so there is not much else to consider. Thread size is 1-1/8-20. (1.120-20)

The platform is good to go, and it will shoot fine with a good barrel and a good shooter. Many people have built long range rifles from a PTA.
