    243 throats

Are Savage 243s typically deep throated? Mine will accept a 95 grain SST seated to 2.760. Makes for a wicked looking round.
I think I'd like a shorter throat for when the time comes to chase rifling up the barrel...

You don't have a long throat.

At 2.760" the 95 gr SST is seated 3/8" inside the case. And not having a Boattail gives you TONS of room for chasing the lands.

In my opinion, Savage makes their 243win freebore perfect length.

If I had to guess a length of your freebore I'd say it's in the 0.090" area.

Good to know. Thank you Sir.
I previously seated the SST's to 2.635 and got good results. Will be interested to see if there is any accuracy improvement being closer to the lands.

A note of caution: Pressures can jump 5,000 psi when the bullet is touching the lands rather than given a chance to jump.

That means one should back off to a starting load and look for signs of pressure when chasing the lands. Then one can do a normal load work-up including asessment of max load in one’s rifle with the lands engaged.
