How much difference in muzzle velocity would I experience with a 2" shorter barrel in the compact with a .223 load ? Would the rifle be louder to hearers away from the rifle?Would like to have a compact for carry in my pickup to use on coyotes and groundhogs but don't want excessive noise when I shoot,either.
The velocity difference will be negligible in any practical sense, certainly less than 100 fps. I have a 16" AR carbine that flattens coyotes as far out as I care to shoot, 200+ yards. I shortened my standard Axis to 18" to make it handier and can tell absolutely no difference in performance on game. The report is louder to the shooter, but I doubt anyone far off would notice a difference.
