According to my reference book, they didn't so the Chickapee Mass. stamping until 1946. It could be a replacement barrel!!?? 1920 is correct for the ser#.
Hello Everyone
Newbie to this sight and happy to be here. I have a Savage 99 in the 250-3000 caliber serial number 216514 which I think the rifle was made in 1920. it is a takedown model. On the barrel it says Savage Arms Corporation Chickapee Mass. My question is this could this barrel be period correct? I know Savage merged with Stevens in 1920. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info. It has Lyman double folding sights, ramp dovetail front sight and Lyman peep sight. Is there any way to date barrel?
That marking was used from 1946-1960. The early takedowns used an interrupted thread, later, but I don't know when, they changed to a full thread and you had to completely unscrew the barrel. If yours ahs the fully threaded barrel I would say it was re-barreled at one point!
If it was made from 49 up it should have a date code stamped on it somewhere as well.
Savage- "never say never".
