    New Guy From VA

    Hello,

Just picked up my first centerfire Savage last night. It's a mutt of a rifle from some leftover parts I found cleaning out a buddy's work bench (he's in hospice and wife needs help getting rid of his stuff, I tried to pay her for it but she wants to get work out of me instead). Short action .308 with a threaded 20" barrel and what appears to be a Hogue over molded stock with a blind magazine. It needs some TLC and refinishing.

In the pile of parts I somehow missed the recoil lug so I'll order one of them. Any advantages to the thicker aftermarket ones? The magazine spring seems all bent up funny and dummy rounds don't feed, so I have a new spring and follower on order. He did have a barrel wrench on the bench and I picked up that too. The scope bases are not level and look dinged up so a new one piece base is on order as well as some new action screws. Not quite sure what I'll do with the gun, either leave it as an ugly truck gun or it may be a donor action for a long range rifle. But for right now I'm just going to get it back together and see how it shoots.

    Welcome,
Ugly truck gun Savages are tons of fun.
Sitting down at a bench next to some tactifools or big money custom braggarts with an old spray painted Savage sporter with a tuned up factory trigger, bedded with JB weld and a box of handloads is a sport in itself.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.
