I just picked up a 12 gauge model B, and I am trying to find out how old it is. It does not have an engraving on the bottom, but it does have engravings on both sides with the word Fox on them. It has a pistol grip, but does not have a cap on bottom of grip. In multiple places on the reciver, foregrip, and barrel there is a D with a circle around it and the letters D E without a circle. One side of the barrel has (Proof Tested 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch Chamber) the other side has (Fox Savage Arms Corporation Model B Utica NY Made in USA). The real confusion for me is it has a serial number on it. The reason I am confused is because I thought serial numbers didn't start until about 1968, and they stopped making these guns in Utica around 1946. The serial is crude and in a broken line. Did they put serial numbers on these guns before they moved production?
