Long action/Short action etc. meaning

I am still learning about my Savage and need some info. I see people talk about long action, short action, large and small shank. I am not sure what this means. If you can point me to the info or inform me I would be grateful.

My Savage 12VLP 223 is short action only because I read it was, but not sure what that EXACTLY means.
