Anyone build a 6.5-06 off a 30-06 long action? Good results? What barrel did you use?

I used a 24 inch Douglas Stainless medium sporter. I also built a 6.5/257 on a 26 inch
Douglas medium stainless, on a Savage target action, dual port. Of the two, I like
the 6.5/257 a little better, but both are fine. 8 inch twist on both. On a long action
the 06 case works good, and you can get very high velocity. You can also get very low
pressure at a good velocity like this one --> 140 GR bullet, 42 grains IMR 4064, 2700 fps,
very low pressure in the 6.5/06.

I had considered the 6.5-06 but ultimately came to the conclusion that a 6.5-284 was a better all around cartidge.

Better how? They have pretty identical ballistics.
Other than having factory brass available for the 6.5-284,they are about the same.

I built mine off my old 110 FLP 300 WM action,swapped out the firing pin and bolt head,used a McGowen 26" 5.5 contour 1-8 twist,and worked over an unfinished Boyd's LH thumbhole stock for a center feed action.

Actually the 6.5-06 has minimally better ballistics. However the 6.5-284 tends to have a more uniform burn on powder charges due to the case design. There is also a plethora of load data available for the 6.5-284 since it has been a LR king for a good amount of time. Comparatively the 6.5-284 tends to have superior accuracy. Case capacity between the two is a complete wash, as I believe they are identical or nearly so. You can also get 6.5-284 brass without going the process of making it from something else and have somebody grab the wrong ammo based on headstamp. Downside to the 6.5-284 is it tends to be slightly more finicky about feeding due to the design and sharp shoulder.

Now the 6.5-06 AI might just be the king of all.

BTW that's one slick looking rifle you have!

I was considering it but ended up with a 6.5x284. I liked the ability to use factory brass with matching headstamp, and even factory ammo if needed. The 6.5-06AI was tempting too, but in the end I went with a pre-fit that was only available in 6.5x284

Low pressure it right... might as well just shoot a .260 or 6.5 Creedmore.

I did a 6.5-06 on a 26" McGowen 8 Twist. I ran 49grs of H100V getting 2975fps with 140 VLD's. I didn't really try to push it hard at all, but sold it when my focus changed to PRS Competition. Shooting 140VLD's or Hybrids near 3000fps is almost laughable. A 6.5 with the same drops as a 243win or similar 6mm, but even better in the wind with more smack down range! I used Nosler 25-06 Brass. 1 pass of the die and I had my 6.5-06 ready to load. No real work doing it that way! Fun round, would like to do another some day actually!

I use 25-06 brass also. You can load a boat tail 6.5mm bullet straight into it with no sizing. No extra steps whatever.

That'd be far to much neck tension for my tastes... I like to stay around .002-.003 Neck tension.

I had a 6.5-06 on a HVA action, still have the action and got rid of the barrel. I know this will be blasphemy, but I found it no better than the .270 Win for what I was wanting. Anyway to each their own, but I'll stick to the .270 Win for hunting and 6mm and .224 caliber rifles for varmint hunting and target shooting.

6.5x257 is basically a re-hash of the 6.5 Swede. My Swede will do 2900 fps with 140gr bullets no problem.
