Savage Lightweight Hunter with Talley one piece base/rings

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new 16 LWH in 6.5 Creedmoor, with the intent of building a rifle for my backpack mountain hunts. Without going crazy, I want to keep it as light as possible. I've got a VX-2 3-9x40 that I'll use for it, but now I'm stuck on what base and rings to go with. I almost pulled the trigger on the Talleys, but the reviews seem mixed. I noticed several people have indicated that these will leave no room for eye relief adjustment, and some people said they wouldnt even work.. So, my question is, anyone here running the Talleys on a LWH and a Leupold scope? Do you have enough room to set it up no problem?

I've used Talley products and have been pleased. Warne also makes good stuff. I also really like Burris Sig rings, maybe my favorite.

Without using a single piece base(picatinny style) it might be tough getting eye relief and positioning, although one piece base adds weight.

Remember that you can also get the extended Talley mounts that give you more leeway in mounting the scope. Looking at your scope the biggest limitation will be the magnification ring. If you are trying to get the scope as close as possible to the action, the talley base will hit the ring before you can move it as far forward as possible. But I have honestly never had a problem getting proper eye relief even with that potential issue....I think you will be fine. Here are a few examples on my Talley mounts. On one I even filed the base down a bit so I could move the scope further away...

A DNZ Products mount would be another option. See the link below of pics of one of their Game Reaper mounts on the LWH I reviewed a few months back, though I would recommend their 2-pc Hunt Master mounts to eliminate the connecting bar. Weight-wise they're within an ounce or so of the Tally's. It's what I plan on using on my LWH in .250 Savage when it shows up.

Talleys are light and with a short action you should be fine.
